A passion for ancient history
Many of the great characters of history feature in the work of British writer Simon B Jones. The science graduate has written his first book, The Battles are the Best Bits, and is now available on Amazon.
The book is a narrative history which traces events from the Akkadian conquest of Sumer in the Third Millennium BC to the collapse of the Umayyad Caliphate in 750 AD.
Simon, who is married and lives in Cambridgeshire, England, hopes that his writing will entertain and educate readers.
"I have chosen to write the book in an engaging style which addresses the reader directly and have interspersed my own thoughts and experiences throughout the text in order to increase the appeal and readability of the book," he said.
"The Battles are the Best Bits is aimed squarely at the general reader who would like to know more about ancient history and seeks to deliver a very thorough account of the key events and personalities without appearing too daunting.
"To this end I take the reader with me on my journey as I describe the experience of wanting to further my own knowledge and becoming increasingly passionate about history to the point of deciding to write my own book. This is serious history but told with a light-hearted personal slant."
The Battles are the Best Bits is mostly set around the Mediterranean and focuses on the major civilisations which rose and fell in Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece and Rome.
The book required an enormous amount of research which took Simon around 10 years to complete.
